After spending the traditional day with my family for Christmas, I packed up my newly restocked Swift (McMillan Sako stock)
and drove a couple of hours to meet up with a friend for my first ever try at calling a fox. Late afternoon I hunted my friend's
property with no luck. No foxes seen - not much cover for foxes on this farm. My friend had arranged for me to hunt a nearby
farm with better cover for fox, so we made our way to the other property on dusk
We got directions from the farmer to try the far end of his property which backs on to a river. The field was heavily covered
along the river and looked like good fox habitat. I selected a stand on the side of an incline, at the base of a dead tree. This
gave me about 40 yards of clear view across my whole line of site and provided good camouflage for me. And, for a bonus,
there was a rabbit colony about 50 yards behind me, so my calling should be extra enticing for a predator.
I settled in and gave a 10 second blast on the call, then followed about 30 seconds later with another 10 second blast. Right as
I finished the second call sequence, a fox came flying out of the long grass and charged down the incline towards me. I let out a
"woof" to stop him, then dropped him with a 40gn Vmax to the head at about 25 yards.
Very satisfying when you visualise the set-up and it all goes according to plan.
