Edit

I find it interesting that people refer to the 17/18" twist .30 cal. barrels as 'slow twist' barrels. These barrels with a 1.00" long jacket bullet produce G.S. numbers around 1.5, as Randy points out. I shot a whole season with the 1.080 long jackets in my 17 twist Lilja with no problems...the G.S. numbers are in the 1.2-1.3 range for this combo.

So...here's the weird part. The  6PPC with a 68 gr. BR bullet in a 1.14 twist operates with a G.S. of around 1.2-1.3 as well!

Perhaps the tuning issues that the PPC shooters sometimes struggle with as the days temps and humidity changes could be best addressed by a re-evaluation of the G.S. situation of these combinations?

I've had exactly one conversation with Walt Berger, and he told me that there wasn't a harder combo to shoot than the 6PPC with a 68 gr. bullet and that was why he always shot the shorter 62's & 65's in his 6PPC. This was back when he was winning a lot, but he told me that a lot of people thought he was crazy for shooting "...those itty bitty bullets."

I've got some special 58 gr. 6 mm BR quality bullets made by a 'name' bullet maker that shoot every bit as good from my 6BR as do the 65-68 gr. 'standard' BR bullets....maybe a 6PPC with these bullets and a 16" twist would be worth a look? Or a 6BR with 68's and a 13" twist?

As Artie Johnson from 'Laugh In" used to say... "Very interesting."    -Al
