Thanks for the Pears Randy,
My thinking with regard to Efficiency is related to the fact that you can take the BR case with , say 35 g of 130 and make it go 3000 fps + with some of your light bullets and one needs to use a lot more powder in a longer case with the same diamater to make the same thing happen. I n addition, I am quite certain that I have observed that there is a good bit of Muzzle flash from longer cases , which indicates to me that they aren't EFFICIENTLY burning all the powder being put in them and My gunsmith has noted that there is often barrel damage a few inches ahead of the throat in some of the 308 , 30-47 cased barrels he has looked at. this may also be an indication that there is a lack of efficiency. I don't agree that the 6PPC , 30 BR are a happenstance as you discribe it. I think there is more to it. I don't disagree that powders play a part but there must be more to it. Perhaps the reported extra performance from the TallDog may be the same sort of thing. Bigger cylinder diamater.
I don't see the issue of making cases as an big imparment to this game or sport in general. Most of we who tinker are easily able to make cases that are straight and work well. In addition , I like to make them so that particular aspect of BR isn't an issue for me. It is a pleasure.
I find your take on neck tension interesting as Dnan Hackett credits the accuracy of the PPC he shot the big score in the postal with as an additional half thousants in neck tension. One has to wonder if more may be better right down the line, doesn't one ?
The beat goes on and I continue to think longer/thinner is not better. Only time will tell. P
