Hi All;
I had a great day today. My Hunting Partner (13 year old Grandson)(Drew) and I went to the range today. He had expressed an interest in BR shooting and competition and that was all the excuse I needed to hopefully start him out on the right stool. The event fired up all my old teacher (retired) instincts. All the way out there we discussed fundimentals and shooting tech.
Once we arrived, I showed him how to setup the bench, wind flag and himself. The rifle had been without a scope for 4 years so we had to site in a 36X Leupold I had. The rifle is the first BR rifle I ever had (22 PPC). I had about 50 preloads from way back when so I thought it would be a good time to empty those cases. I use 52gr Berger moly coated bullets and N133 powder.
Took about 5 rounds to site it in. He picked right up on shooting Free Recoil and a 2 oz. trigger. When he started shooting the wind was very gentle. We used one wind flag at about 30 yards and he really stayed tuned to it. His first target was a 50-4X, so was the second. The wind came up a little but he did well. He used the outside of the ten ring on a couple of shoots but went back to the sighter when confused. Still kept knocking the tens in there. His third target was a 50-2X.
Now the wind came up a little more and got switchy. Mostly from about 11-1 oclock. You know, the swicth that turns tens into long strings of explitives. His next target took a little more work but he got a 50-1X.
The last target was shot in a nasty, switchy wind. He had a couple of raged tens on the outside of the ten ring but he ended up with a 50-1X. So his total was 250-12X.
He was more excited when we finished then when we started and let it be known that this was about as exciting as life could get. As a proud grampa, I was a bit excited myself. When the idea of going to LaGrande the 21st of Dec. and shooting in a real match was brought up, I did not have to twist his arm. So unless the weather turns real bad,( I believe he would walk and carry his rifle case) he and I will be there and this time I am bringing a rifle for me to use.( my new 30 BR)
I will try to post a picture to go with this story.
