If there are two subjects that I have an opinion on it is stocks and scopes. In both cases companies out there just simply seem to miss the boat. Remington actions give you more options then most. The Remington 40X wood rangemaster stock is a great choice.
Take about 1/4 inch off each side of the forend. make the sides FLAT when you do this. Then round them off slightly to give it an oval but almost round effect. Looks great when finished. I like the thick pistol grip on this stock.
H.S. Precision is one of the easiest ways to go. Either the Remington 700VS or the 40X version. In each case order the light GREY with dark webbing. It looks great compared to the factory stocks. This is a great company to do business with.
Another great stock is the Savage 112J single shot. If you can get one to use as a template then have someone duplicate the outside dimensions and inlet it for a Remington. You can go Laminated with endless choices of colors or Walnut or Maple.
This would be an extremely heavy stock in Laminate. My idea of an ergonomic stock.
McMillan has two stocks that I like. One is the previously mentioned Sako Varmint. The other one that I would reserve for
big calibers is the McHale stock. The color they have pictured is red with black marble. I put one together for a friend with Green and White Marble. Nesika J action in 6mm/284. Muzzle break and Leupold Mk4-16X.
I have absolutely no use for ergonomic stocks. They look painful. Having said that the one that I would use is the one from Accuracy International. For me I would go white for my winter hunting. Maybe 243 improved.
If you want to see a kick ass stock go to the kimber web page and look at the LONGMASTER PRO. I have not handled one but my initial impression is that it looks great. You could always order one and get it next summer. (they say spring) then take the barrel off sell it and put a match barrel on. $1300.00 would give you a great rifle. I have always wanted a single shot model 70. Then again it might shoot great out of the box and the cost would be about $1000.00
Thats my story and I stickin to it.
