Just read your post Stank,  I have done this several times on Panda's I put together for folks.  On one I cut a .160" deep slot 3/8"wide and when I bedded the rifle the bedding itself (in theory) became the lug.  Did it help??  The owner of the rifle (which is basically a squirrel shooting rifle) is insisting I build him another exactly the same way.  He shot a couple groups at the range a week ago and even though the rifle is chambered in the Obermeyer and utilizes a 17 twist barrel he printed .188, .208, .190, groups with it. with 112 gr bullets.  It may not have helped but it sure did not hurt.  Be well, Larry
