Greg, I used to use both 748 and 760 in my .22/250s - as Al points out (above) in this thread, with both of these numbers, velocity drops off noticably in cold temps. In most .22/250s, 748 delivered exceptional groups - I used to shoot 36.5-37.0 Gr. of the stuff with 52/3 Gr. bullets. The 760 was very good, but, in most rigs, not quite as good as the 748 - but the 760, like H-380 pretty well fill the case.
I wound up going with the Win. 760 in the Ackley Swift because it gave me the velocity I was expecting (why have a Ackley if ya can't have the VELOCITY?! :O ) . . .during initial load testing, based upon the Nosler Reloading manual info and the "accuracy" I got using it, I went with H-4831 - it shot very pleasing groups and the "book" said MV should be right at 4K FPS! When I ran the loads over Mike Bigelow's Oehler 35P; the results were a BUMMER - 3570 FPS - hell, ya can almost do that with a .222 Mag! :( Further, inspectionof the bore revealed a very nasty carbon deposit in the lead and throat - and stubborn to boot - it took a LOT of elbow grease to get the carbon out!
Naturally, I blamed the carbon on the "poor" burn of the 4831 due to the obviously low pressure . . .I went back to some faster burn rate powders and the 760 delivered 4043 FPS and pretty decent (sub .6" on average) 5-shot groups! So, it was decided THAT it would probably "work". However, when out West, Joe and I spent most of one afternoon euthanizing prairie dogs which were scheduled to be poisoned! Purposely, I did not clean the BBL until returning home - the ugly carbon build up was back - and this with a relatively HOT load! :(
So, as much as it hurts, We're going to have to take Al's advice and try the AA2700 - I almost did, but it IS another BALL powder and I assumed would not be any better . . . my inexperience is hard to face - been shootin' the Br rigs for WAY too long . . . . Also, based upon what several others have advised, I did purchase some more Varget (which was lousy in my HBR rigs). One of these had better work, or my alter ego is going to drive up to "THE ZONE" and extract a pound or two of flesh! ;)
