Al, it was another well run and well attended event at a generally user friendly facility - here are a few of the highlights:
During Saturday's HBR event, a Red HOT Dale Fritts nabbed the 100 yard trophy via a 250-20x(this tied the range record established a year ago, by Mike Bigelow)! Congratulations, Dale! The one and only Dave Greene was first loser ( 250-19) and Dick Baier was ring bearer via 250-16. Twisted in a knot, at 250-14x, Brian Miller, Mike Bigelow, &Tom Gollob wresteled over the third loser slot - Mike came out on top . . and that concluded the respectable shooting . . .
Joe Magee decided to win the 200 - and he DID - however, Roy Oines had a a stake in the outcome, 'losing' to Mr. Magee via the tie breaker rule! Congratulations are due to both Joe and Roy for a pair of 249-7X aggregates! Mike Bigelow posted a 249-6 for third place and Dale Fritts a 248-8 for fourth!
The HBR Grand Agg went like this: Mike Bigelow claimed consecutive IBS WI State Champion titles via a 'semi-respectable'
499-20X! Congratulations, Mike! Meanwhile, Dale Fritts, Roy Oines and Joe Magee fought over the first loser position via their X-counts, respectively: 28;22;19. Dave Green, via a nice 497-24 was fifth.
Dale Fritts shot the high X-count - 28!
Sunday's conditions proved somewhat more vexing - with but a single exception, the VfS competitors failed to equal the [winning] Hunter Rifle scores of the previous day!
Dave Greene, eclipsed the VfS 100 Yard range record with a pretty fair 250-21X! Congratulations, Dave! Mr. Greene accomplished this feat using the little cartridge that 'CAN'T' - a .30BR/1:18" twist PacNor/125Gr. bullet combination!Mike Bigelow posted a 250-19X tally, thus nabbed second place - Mike used a Panda actioned Hv rig to which he fitted a [slightly worn] 30x47HBR barrel which used to belong on his original Kodiak! At 250-18, Ron Shultz worked his way into the top five shooting a 6PPC; Tom Gollob, shooting a Hv rig sporting a 1:17" twist Lilja barrel, chambered for the 30x44 HBR was fourth @ 250-17x; "BIG MIKE" (a.k.a. R.G. Robinett) , via tie breaker, wrested fifth place away from Dale Fritts @ 250-16.
The VfS 200 Yard stage proved troubling for all - rapidly shifting mirage and light wind speeds rendered trigger squeezing an intimidating prospect! When the tally was posted, "BIG MIKE", shooting his trusty 1:18" twist Morrison barreled .30BR was TOP GUN (how 'bout them 30BRs ?! ;) ) The winning number was a humbling 246-6x! Craig Nagel and Ron Shultz (245-4) arm wresteled for first loser, with Mr. Nagel coming out on top! Dan Hackett (244-4) was fourth and Joe Magee(244-3) filled out the top five.
In order of finish, the VfS Grand: R.G. Robinett(496-22); Ron Shultz(495-22);Dave Greene(494-22); Mike Bigelow(494-22); Joe Magee(494-18). Dave Green, gentleman that he is, stole the High X-count trophy via the tie breaker! ;)
The WI State two gun Champion: Mike Bigelow (993-42x)! Congratulations, Mike! In winning the TWO GUN, Mr. Bigelow established himself as the first individual to win consecutive Wisconsin State TWO GUN Championships! Joe Magee(992-37) was first loser, with Dale Fritts finishing third(991-50x - HIGH X-count), Dave Greene fourth via 991-46 and Ron Shultz fifth at 989-41.
Of note, all of the yardage, Grand and Two Gun Aggs were won by individuals shooting thirty caliber rifles sporting either PacNor or Morrison 1:18" twist barrels, or Lilja 1:17" twist barrels . . . I'm not gloating (yet), but Clint Eastwood rode by and told the undertaker, "start making coffins - PPC shaped - a LOT of 'em!" ;)
Lastly, the Holmen crew hosted another well run event - I do not know how Roy Oines and Craig Nagel are able to do the preperation, shoot as well as they do AND keep a handle on things as the match progresses. At the last minute, Mary Berg filled in for a score keeper who needed to be elsewhere for the weekend - thank you for giving up your mini vacation for us Mary!
And if my pal Stoney is out there, remember, it's all about reading, writing and arithmatic - master these, and you will be able to become anything you desire! "Math and science are where it's at!" Ya don't want to grow up to be a bullet maker! ;)
Keep 'em ON the X! R.G.
