Fergus, the NBRSA Hunter taper is as follows: maximum shank diameter 1.250" for a length not to exceed four inches ahead of the bolt face, then tapering to 0.750" diameter at a point 26" ahead of the bolt face. I do not know how the "California" taper, popular prior to the advent of the LIGHT stocks, compares, but believe it would be close the this.
I'm not an expert on fitting and chambering barrels - however, I do have my opinions; I like to keep the length between 21 and 22", while using the longest section of shank compatible with making the weight limit. Having said that, the three BEST barrels I've owned were all 19-20" in length - was that partly due to stiffness?!?!! Makes me wonder . . .
I believe you'll find that on most LV rigs, REBARRELING, using a 5"x1.250" shank and HBR taper, weight will not be an issue and you'll end up with a stiffer barrel than possible using the typical LV type taper (1.200" shank). Also, the bulk of the weight will be closer to the center of the rig, providing better balance and handling.
Keep 'em ON the X! R.G.
