Greg, some of my guns have the tops bedded and some do not. I verify that there is good contact by taking some of my bride's lipstick (Victoria's Secret 'Fiery Ice' is my...err, my wife's)  favorite. I apply it to the ring tops, snug them down, and check the contact. If contact isn't good, I bed the tops.
