This tread is going nicely. I was out again this morning shooting a 30x47 edge stock leopold 6x scope hunter gun. The weather was excellent cloudy very light cross wind Nothing hard about the conditions for once. So I tried different styles. And the results for me anyway are in.Free recoil worked very well. with proper bag setup this is the most repeatable for high scores.
Hard hold, Not impressive hard to do the same thing again and again.
Soft hold, better then a hard hold but still not as good as feel recoil.
Very light hold. thumb of trigger finger resting on stock of rifle. Now I liked this one. very high scores and easy to do. Also easy on the body and the gun does not get so up set in the bags.
My bag set-up.
1. Place front rest on bench with the legs all the way retracted.
2. Slam the rear bag onto the bench to settle the sand. I use a rabbit ear with heavy sand in the bag and ears. Then form the ears out slightly with your hand. I also add powder now.
3. Put the gun on the rest and bags and align with target. Center the front rest to the rear and double check the alignment to the target.
4. Screw the front legs down and give them a whack with a hammer to set into the bench.
5. Slide the rifle back and forth several times pushing the stock into the rear bag.
6. Tighten up the side adjusters on the front rest not too tight but tight enough to make if difficult to pull the rifle straight up.
7. Now here?s the part that matter?s the most. without touching the gun with your trigger hand adjust rear bag and speed screw so the gun is in the center of the sighter bull. Just by looking through the scope not touching the stock anywhere.
8. Double check your alignment by raising the gun up by raising the front of the rest using the wheel. It should go from the sighter to the #5 bull with out any side adjustment. And also go up to the #4 bull the same way and be perfectly center in all three bulls.
9. After you have it in line with the targets go back to the sighter bull and line it up perfectly making sure you are not using any pressure on the bench or rifle. Note if you are using a good bench this won?t be a problem but if you are like me and spend most of your spar time shooting you really don?t want to spend a day or two on the bench.
10. Ready to shoot. Place bolt in rifle load it up and look through the scope if its way off of the sighter bull then loading upset the bags and you need to figure out why. Its more then likely the rear bag not settled enough. Keep working with it till it stays almost in line with the target.
11. Line up the gun with the sighter bull and without touching the rifle. It should be inline without ANY side thrust from your shoulder or hand. Now place your hand on the rifle and if the crosshairs move use less pressure on the stock. touch your shoulder to the rifle but don?t move the rifle. When you are in place and everything is in order your hand will be on the rifle and your shoulder will be touching the stock but it will be on the bull.
12. Watch the flags take your shot when ready.
This worked very well for me today and it sounds harder then it is. Go out and see what you think. I was not having any trouble completing this and shooting my five record targets with in the seven minutes.
The main idea is to line up the rifle with the bull without touching the gun and then shooting it with your hand on the stock and shoulder on the recoil pad without upsetting the gun in the bags.
Please give me your feed back on this I really would like to know what you think
