First day of the LAST year of the decade - a BAD day for central IA coyotes!

Here's a pic of Mike Bigelow and his coyote huntin' pal, Mike Dasher - reverse order in the pic - at the conclusion of their first day afield in 2010 - yes, counting begins with ONE and ends with ZERO, and not the other way around - I count TEN coyotes, NOT 0 + 9 . . . I rest my case! ;) RG   (Note: In 'normal' weather, some of these coyotes would be classified a "mostly dead" - but, at -19 F wind-chill, Mother Nature had her way - they're  'frozen stiff': thank god, for not only the new math, but also "global warming" - if not for the latter, we could could be enjoying a REAL winter! ;)

    P.S. perhaps Mike B. will add some comments (?? ) . . .

Ya know, I gave them permission to hunt, "West of the house" . . . not to run all over the county and even into some of MY secret places! ;) Hopefully, Mike will fill-in some of the details - I can tell you this: when the door bell rang at about 4:30 PM on 1-1, I figured that it must be Mike, stopping by to show me a couple of coyotes . . . when I opend the door, said hello, and asked, "how many did ya get - three, four?", Mike's smile suggested a few more than THAT. But, I couldn't have expected them to have beaten their first day out for the season - back in Mid-Dec. - when the pair of them tag-teamed seven coyotes! When Mike responded, "ten - they're in Dasher's truck . . . he'll be here any minute - got your camera handy?" Below is a pic of the back of Mike Dasher's truck - poor MD was relegated to the skinning and stretching crew . . . or, maybe, he just took them 'as/is' to the fur-buyer. I don't know what they're bringing this season - probably not much. I do know that Mike D. was toting his trusty, but newly barreled .223, while Mike B. used a .17 Rem. and shot Kindler 30 Gr. 'Golds'. Again, hopefully, Mike will fill us in on the actions, barrels, scopes, etc. - oh, and some of the shot details! RG

I have to say thanks to RG for posting the pictures, as I'm severely computer challenged and not to willing to learn. Just to start the day it was -17 F with 15 to 30mph winds it was cold to say the least. Little about Mike Dasher, there is no snow to deep, track to long, or is it to cold for him if he thinks there is a chance there is a coyote on the end of it. As I get older I think everybody should have a partner like that. The day started slow and by 8:30AM we only had 1 dog down. Then the snow started to blow, we almost called it quits, sometimes we could only see about a 1/4 mile, but we started to see more dogs. It was one of them magical days when it seemed every where we went there were coyotes. Mike D.walked out on a couple that we spotted they were buried in deep, all we could see was the top of their heads and ears. The rest were shot on the run from 50yds to a little over 300yds.on the run. Mike Dasher was shooting a 223 Rem. 1-14 twist Shilen, 40gr. vmax with a case full of W-748. I was shooting a Borden Alpine action, Lijla 1-9 chambered in a 17 Rem with Kinder 30gr.golds and N-150 powder.

    A day I will remember
