It is with deep regret and sadness that we have just learned that Roy Oines passed away Thursday.

Its my understanding that he was headed to shoot at St. Louis for the weekend. He will be missed

by many. We will post the funeral date as we recieve it and where to send cards.

    God Bless you Roy

I still can't believe he is gone, he will be greatly missed by all of us. He has always helped me with anything I needed, I would stop by his shop when I was over either turkey hunting or deer hunting and his door and shop were always open to me, I can't say enough about how much of a gentleman he was.

I was shocked when I heard the news that Roy had passed away.  I called Stan and we had a nice talk about Roy and all the pleasant memories we had about him.  He was a true gentlemen, honest, helpful, friendly and a fantastic competitor/shot and gunsmith.  Roy was one of the first people my wife Lynn would find when we were at a match to give a big hug to, she always said he had the nicest smile and was such a pleasant person to talk to.  Roy would always give me a hard time about my bright orange stocked HBR rifle, calling it the ugliest thing he had ever seen and to keep it away from him!!!  I responded by taking a picture of it and hiding it in his truck so he would find it later, we had alot of laughs about that one!!

To Roy, I raise my glass of cold beer to you my friend in a toast.. I know you are looking down on us from Heaven smiling, while sitting at a comfortable loading bench, checking your brass, cleaning your rifle and thinking about all those 250's you'll be shooting on God's range!

God Bless,  Lynn & Todd Nyhus

Once again, I find myself speachless: Todd's memorial, "says it all" . . . and the pics say even more. Roy, you will be sorely missed, but not forgotten. RG

    Re: Lost a friend

Thank you all for the kind words. I’ll pass them on to his family.

Roy was one of the instigators as to my involvement with BR shooting. I was at the range one day while Roy and the others were shooting the Tcl match. When they were finished Roy asked if I wanted to shoot his gun. Well heck, it was a custom target rifle that I couldn’t refuse. There was a target at 100 yards he told me to shoot. He was watching in the spotting scope. It was a solid ten, just a little low. WOW what a trigger. He said “shoot it again.” I loaded another, in the wrong side of that custom action and let it fly. What…. No way, I looked at Roy and said I had missed the target completely. He gave me that look, grabbed his rifle and said “I’m putting this away. You shoot it better than me.” What is he talking about? I missed the whole target!  He said I had put the second shot through the same hole. The target was retrieved and he showed how the hole was a tad larger and how the second bullet made the hole a wee bit oval shaped. I was hooked.  I think that was in 1994 or 1995. Since then I have enjoyed many hours and many miles with Roy. He also introduced me to R.G. Guy Chism, Dick Baier and many others. He took me under his wing and helped me so much but only if I’d ask and I asked a lot. He was a man of few words. While traveling one day I was rambling on and the thought accrued to me. Why was I doing all the talking? I shut up and didn’t say a word.  The radio was turned off and it seemed like hours before he said “ready for the feed bag?” He was my gunsmith, mentor, chauffer, and tour guide, big brother that kept me in line, counselor and my best friend. Roy is gone but he left us with a lot of good memories and friends to share them with. CJ

    Hi all!

Thank you so much for sharing your memories of my Dad.  It has been great to hear all the stories from his friends.  We kids were too little involved with his shooting life, so it is nice to be assured that he had so many good times and good friends in this circle!

Thanks, again for the outpouring of condolences and feel free to share any more stories!  We have really been enjoying them!
