    Couple of new shootn irons

I thought you might be interested in two rifles I had built during 2007. Both on Zastava Mauser actions, Kahles glass and laminate walnut stocks. Top one in the picture is 9.3x64 and the bottom one is 300 Win mag. The bottom photo gives the best view of the laminate layers in the stock. Have not had the opportunity to hunt with either rifle as yet.

Fergus, VERY NICE . .  . but, bassakwards! ;) Seriously, thank you for sharing! Did you do any of the wood and metal work?

I have a question - what's your "secret" for getting such nice photos to post on the forum? Despite my various camera manipulations, I am always disappointed with the quality of my pics, while yours are always quite nice. RG

Randy     Do you know how hard it is to find this stuff for a leftie??? No, none of the work was done by me… I wanted a good job :).

On the topic of posting photos, I guess the “secret” is to use an external host for the picture. I post my pictures on http://photobucket.com/ then add a link to the picture in the body of my post. The forum software on this site then recognises the image and displays the picture, not the link I posted.

If you want some more info on the procedure, shoot me an email and I’ll give you more detail.      Fergus

     Hey Fergus,

Very nicely done!!  They are beautiful displays of fine gunsmithing, what brand of stocks are those?

Guys - Thanks for the comments. Its great getting the feedback.

Todd - those stocks were made by Geoff Slee, a full time stock maker out of Melbourne where I live. Geoff works mainly in walnut and is just getting started in laminated walnut.

A couple of questions for Fergus

     Very nice rifles!

1  Does your friend do stock work for folks in the States? For instance, if one over here wanted a stock for a Remington 700 short action could he build it, finish it and ship for final bedding by the owner? Contact information?

2 Several years ago I heard that guns were confiscated and nearly banned down under. Could you please fill me in on the status of what the laws are and how a normal civilian can own firearms post-ban?

    Tom

1 I think Geoff would be quite happy to work with you. He does mail order all round Australia and has probably done business with guys in the US before. I can forward contact details, but so far as I know, he doesnt have an email address let alone a web site. I think something like a Rem 700 would be very well suited to a project like this. I will give Geoff a call this week and let you know whet he says.

2 The answer to that is long, but the short answer is that laws were significantly tightened up in 96/97, with the govt introducing a whole bunch of extra paperwork which scared a lot of people out of the sport at the time. The govt would not automatically renew any existing firarms licences - we all had to reapply and fill out the new paper work. I had to get permission from my wife to own a firearm under the new laws - she had to co-sign the form for my new application. Also with the new laws, the govt introduced a complete ban on semiauto rifles (including rimfires) and semiauto and pump shotguns. You can still own most other types of firearms here for hunting or target shooting. This was all done by the Australian equivalent of the Republican Party which I had just helped to vote into power at the time (surprise!).
