Al, yes - I shot it, but not well. :( I had no time to do any tuning - just fire-formed 54 cases (by the way, with TOO much powder! ;) So, I began the 100 (no warm-up) with the F-F load and jam-seat - during the F-F, it produced solid 4 & 1 groups: the last four 5-shot groups featured four of the shots under 0.20". So, I thought I'd be "close" . . . persistent vertical plagued the 100, as I got several mis-fires (CCI-BR4s) and blamed that - I deduced that I was getting erratic ignition . . . so, switched to WSMs for that last two groups and got the same results - one "deal wrecker" in every group . . and all vertical: AGGED a pathetic .328! :( But , THAT did beat 200 Yd. Agg winner, and travelin' pal, Mike Bigelow! ;)
The WSM primers were very near BLANKING! Despite that, the action functioned as if nothing out of the ordinary was taking place! So, after a vertical wreck during match one (200 Yd.), I began backing off on the powder - in all, when I was "DONE" (as in, stick a fork in 'im! ;o), I had backed off 1.2 Gr. (2 full numbers on the Harrell's) and the rig was trying to shoot - I closed out with a BIG four, a BIG five . . . and a stinkin' 1.007" wreck on match five - yep, I "held off" one ring, for a non-existant "push" and turned another wad into a wreck! There's hope, but the garter snakes were lounging around our bench . . and HE said that they were laughing at me! ;)
I learned several things: 1) Oak Hills is a very nice facility, with the usual GREAT people - well, except the THE BRAT (Riley, HE only slanderspeople he respects!); 2) NEVER call David Halblom Sr. - JUNIOR! ;) ; 3) Having pals do well if a LOT of fun! :) Oh, and four: NEVER trust a 10 year old! RG
P.S. Al, as you know, regarding custom actions, my luck . . . is, well, to steal a phrase from HEE HAW, "no luck at all" ! ;) Normally, I wouldn't "gripe" [in public] about the minor problems with the new RimRock, but Jim Borden was on top of them PRONTO - and, as this is written, the action is probably already on it's way "home". Per my usual "luck" I got the "one-in-a-thousand" - the one wich, as I tried to explain to Jim, doesn't work - he should have taken THAT into consideration before agreeing to sell me one! ;)
There were two distracting issues (yes, I do NEED an excuse!): 1) Since HE is never happy with how fast we shot, I opted for a RB/LP/REject model - something over 50% of the cases failed to eject. While that does not affect grouping potential, it does work on the mind (mine anyway) and interferes with "proper" attention to conditions, etc.; 2) With my favored CCI-BR4 primers, I was getting about a 10% mis-fire rate - again, another distraction - subsequent "hits" failed to ignite the primers, so, TIME was wasted . . . and without the patience exhibited by Mr. Riley Rowold, I didn't return to the sighter target often enough (so it says here! ;o).
Both of these issues had cropped up during the F-F session, and Jim was already aware of them - I told him I wouldn't return the action until after the Oak Hills event, so I must take credit for having over-ridden Jim's desire to "fix" it first. This afternoon, I received a nice video (from Jim Borden) , showing the RimRock ejecting BR brass flawlessly! :) There was a minor mechanical issue with the ejector plunger, which Jim was able to correct. Also, Jim Installed a heavier firing-pin spring - it seems that, to accommodate easy bolt-lift, most people like the weakest spring possible - as usual, I'm of another world and would rather have to apply a little effort. I thank and commend Jim for putting up with me, getting the issues PROMPTLY addressed, AND for not getting upset with my wanting to shoot a registered event before he could fix things . . but I had my mind made up - I was going to shoot it come hell or, RED HAMMER! ;) In all, it was an enjoyable, if expensive, day at the range! :) RG
