Postal Matches for 2007

Following a successful 2006 season we enter into 2007 with only minor changes. I hope that the rules and procedural changes assist in bringing new blood into the matches as well as keeping last year’s contestants coming back for more. I have begun to solicit prizes from manufacturers and vendors. I hope that by year’s end there will be sufficient inventory that everyone will have received something more than personal gratification for their effort in the matches.

POSTAL MATCH RULES FOR 2007

Classes

VFS or Varmint for Score. These shall be those rifles that fall into this category and are legal in IBS and NBRSA organizations. These are benchrest rifles that weigh no more than 13.5 pounds. Forearms can measure no more than 3 inches wide. Muzzle brakes are illegal.

Factory Class. These are rifles that are essentially rifles as they came from the manufacturer or are factory produced. These rifles can have very minor modifications from their “out of the box” configuration. Actions can be bedded and barrels floated. The factory trigger can only be modified to improve trigger pull and creep. The barrel must be a factory barrel and must be chambered in a caliber available from the factory.

Custom / Hunter Class. Custom rifles fall between VFS and factory guidelines. These are rifles that have had a new or custom barrel installed and do not have a factory chambering. Factory rifles that have a custom trigger installed fall into this class. Hunter rifles are those that fit the IBS and NBRSA guidelines.

Distance

All matches must be fired outdoors at a distance of 100 yards.

Match Rules

This year we are continuing the practice used last year. You may submit a set of targets that have been fired in organized matches provided those targets were fired during the time limits of the postal match that you are sending them in for. Those targets must be dated and signed by the match director at the match. You should give instruction in writing to the match director before the match that you intend to use the targets from that match for your postal match. In this way he knows ahead of time that you will need your targets signed by him after ward. If you are going to submit targets from a match you must notify us before the match is fired. Those match targets only can be submitted. All the targets for one postal match must be fired in the same organized match or in the postal match for that time slot. In the event there is a conflict between the score received at the range and what the postal scorer finds, the decision of the postal scorer shall be final. All matches are standard IBS Score Matches or NBRSA Hunter Score Matches if you are shooting Hunter Class. That is to say you will receive five targets with five record and one sighting bull printed on them. As in IBS, scoring the half inch bull shall be valued at 10 points. The next ring will be valued at 9 points, the next at 8 points, and so on down to 3 points. Any shot outside of the rings and in the square are valued at 2 points. The dot in the center is called an “X”. It has no additional value and is used to decide the winner in all ties. We are scoring using IBS scoring plugs. A shot’s value is dictated by the “best edge” method. If your shot is touching the 10 ring it is a ten. If the shot is touching the dot it is an X. In the event that there is more than one hole in a record target, the shot with the lower value shall be the score given. If your FIRST shot at the sighter is outside the sighter square and hits in a record square I will give you an alibi and you may shoot again at that record bull. Your sighter target is in the lower right corner of each target.

Match Schedule

As you may request that targets for all matches be sent to you at one time, all matches will begin as soon as you get your targets. Our target date is February 15, 2007.

Targets for Match One must be returned to me with the postmark no later than May 7, 2007. If you are returning targets from an organized match, it must be contested between February 16, 2007 and May 7, 2007.

Targets for Match Two must be postmarked no later than June 25, 2006. If you are returning targets fired in an organized match, it must be contested between May 8 and June 25, 2007.

Targets for Match Three must be postmarked no later than August 13, 2007. If you are submitting targets from an organized match, it must be contested between June 25 and August 13, 2007.

Targets for Match Four must be postmarked no later than September 17, 2007. If you are submitting targets from an organized match, it must be contested between August 13 and September 17, 2007.

Awards and Prizes

There will be a match winner lapel pin awarded to the top finisher in each class after each match and a certificate awarded to the top three finishers in each class after each match. There will be a plaque awarded to the season champion in each class and to the members of the championship team provided there are three teams in that class. At this time, January 17, 2007, I am soliciting prizes from manufacturers, vendors, and individuals.

I am still knocking on doors for donations. The method of prize distribution hasn’t been decided yet other than the random drawing for the Rick Averill rifle cleaning cradle. We will draw from the names of those whose money for five matches I have received on April 1, 2007. We will decide on the method of distribution before the first shot is fired. Any money left in the postal match coordinator’s (that’s me) coffers and any monetary prize money I will have received for the postal matches over the course of 2007 will be divided 50%, 30%, and 20% to the first three individual’s names pulled from the celebratory hat. In the event we have more than sixty (60) shooters for the 2007 season, the pot will be split 40%, 30%, 15%, 10%, 5% to the five names pulled out of the hat. In order to qualify for this drawing you must have fired all five matches. In order to avoid any hint of impropriety I won’t shoot the postal matches.

The entry fee for each individual match will be $12.00. If you choose to have all the targets for the five matches sent to you at one time, the fee will be $50.00
